Algorithms suggest, humans decide

Joaquim Jorge, professor at DEI and president of the IEEE Computer Society, argues in an interview with RHmagazine that artificial intelligence (AI) should support, not replace, human decision-making in organizations.

Drawing on the revision of the Artificial Intelligence Act of the European Union, under which AI systems applied to human resources are required to ensure human oversight, transparency, and accountability, the researcher warns of the risk of excessive dependence on generative tools.

“Algorithms recognize statistical patterns; they do not understand the social meaning or moral impact of the decisions they recommend,” says Joaquim Jorge, advocating for a hybrid model in which algorithms structure information, while final decisions remain human. For the professor, automating judgment is equivalent to giving up leadership.
