In an article published in Público newspaper, Luís Caires, a professor at DEI, states that the enthusiasm surrounding generative artificial intelligence (AI) has fueled exaggerated fears about the disappearance of qualified professions and the declining relevance of higher education in computer science.

In the article, the professor highlights three key facts that encourage a more critical reflection on the topic: the enormous debts accumulated by major technology companies investing in AI, without guarantees of sustainable financial returns; the exhaustion of human-created content required to train these models; and the fact that such systems depend on massive amounts of data and computational power, making their development extremely costly.

According to the professor, “The key issue is not so much how to teach with AI or how to use AI, but rather how we can learn and work better, with AI and all kinds of tools.”
