Inês Lynce and Luísa Coheur, professors at DEI, have authored an article in the newspaper ECO about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on society.

The authors state that in 2026 (70 years after the term Artificial Intelligence was first coined) AI reaches a historic turning point, moving beyond an academic promise to become an omnipresent technology with significant economic and social impact. Unlike previous industrial revolutions, AI is now automating human cognitive abilities, particularly transforming the education sector and traditional models of learning and assessment.

The professors argue that the real challenge is no longer the technology itself, but rather how society chooses to use it, either to enhance human capabilities or to deepen inequalities.
