Monkey, selfie, AI

Starting from the “monkey selfie" copyright dispute, Nuno Nunes, professor at DEI, reflects in an article published in the newspaper Expresso on issues of authorship and responsibility in artificial intelligence (AI).

In the same article, he warns about “enchanted determinism,” which presents AI as autonomous and mysterious, obscuring the human and corporate role and potentially absolving corporate creators and regulators of responsibility.

He concludes by noting that AI results from companies, data, and human labor, leaving us to choose between passively accepting it as a mystery or critically understanding how it was created and what vision of the world it reflects.
