Miguel Mira da Silva, professor at DEI, argues in an article published by the newspaper Expresso that programming is only one part of Computer Science and has never been the main role of a computer engineer.

In light of the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), he considers it necessary to rethink education, strengthening skills such as problem formulation, solution testing, and the supervision of AI-generated code. The professor considers assessment a “real challenge” and has reduced the weight of homework, returning to paper-based exams.

Regarding the job market, he highlights the “huge shortage of talent” in Computer Science and the need for professionals prepared for more demanding tasks. However, he acknowledges that programmers will have to adapt to these changes and move towards more complex roles.
