"Physical AI": the path to the future?

Arlindo Oliveira, professor at DEI, took part in the Conferência .IA in themed "Agentes, Infraestrutura, Soberania e Decisão".
During the event, he argued that the next major revolution in Artificial Intelligence (AI) may emerge from robotics, an area in which China currently leads the world. He also highlighted that Europe could leverage its research strengths to become a key player in what is known as "Physical AI."
The professor also stressed the importance of strengthening Europe's strategic autonomy in digital infrastructure and identified promising areas for future investment. He discussed the potential impact of AI on critical thinking and cognition and defended continued investment in AMALIA, Portugal's national AI language model, as a way to strengthen the country's expertise and technological capabilities.
