How AI is transforming software development

José Alves Marques, DEI Emeritus Professor, interviewed Pedro Samorrinha, a software engineer with around 20 years of experience in the industry, in an article published in Jornal Económico, discussing the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on software development.

The interviewee revealed that the adoption of AI agents is increasingly enabling faster development without compromising quality, through short implementation and verification cycles. He nevertheless highlighted the importance of rigorous methodologies, precise specifications, and human validation.

José Alves Marques also reflects on how this transformation is changing the role of junior engineers, shifting the focus from programming to specification, architecture, and validation.
