A team composed of Filipe Altoe, PhD student in Computer Science and Engineering; Sérgio Pinto, Master’s student in Computer Science and Engineering and Sofia Pinto, DEI Professor, developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) model capable of automating fact-checking, helping journalists fight online disinformation.

The system performs and provides users with all the fact-checking steps and presents the sources used. According to the researchers, this process, which could previously take days, can now be completed in just 10 minutes, not replacing the work of professionals but strengthening their capabilities. The model was validated by more than one hundred journalists.

The study was presented at the international IJCAI conference in Montreal.
