Artificial Intelligence and the future of (truly) new knowledge

Arlindo Oliveira, Professor at DEI, explores the future of (truly) new knowledge through artificial intelligence (AI) in an article published by “O Jornal Económico”.

In recent decades, advances in AI have become part of everyday life, with technologies such as facial recognition, autonomous gameplay, and fluent text generation. Each of these achievements stems from three distinct approaches: supervised learning, reinforcement learning, and self-supervised learning. However, despite the progress made, these systems are still limited by the knowledge they were trained on. From Arlindo Oliveira’s perspective, the future holds the promise of a new era of truly groundbreaking discoveries through the development of agents capable of interaction and continuous learning.
