On the 1st of July, the Técnico Innovation Center hosted the official launch of AMALIA, the first Portuguese Large Language Model.

As part of the project, DEI professors André Martins and Alberto Abad lead two research teams responsible for the model's development. The team led by André Martins, a professor at DEI and DEEC and a researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), was responsible for coordinating and developing AMALIA's core model, which generates accurate and context-aware text responses. The team led by Alberto Abad, a professor at DEI and a researcher at INESC-ID, was responsible for integrating multimodal speech capabilities, enabling AMALIA not only to interpret text but also to receive and process spoken instructions.

Developed by a national consortium of academic and research institutions, AMALIA was designed to understand and generate content in European Portuguese. The model represents a significant milestone in strengthening research and technological autonomy in Artificial Intelligence in Portugal.
