Testimonials: what our Outstanding Students say

In this "Testimonials" we interview Nuno Policarpo, winner of a Prémio de Mérito FIDWARD.
- Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey at IST.
I'm Nuno Policarpo, and I grew up playing board games and video games with my family, which sparked my interest in technology. Following that interest, I began my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering at Técnico in 2019 and completed my Master's in November of last year.
- What did winning this award mean to you personally?
It was a pleasant surprise to find out that I had been awarded this prize. I wasn’t aware of its existence, but I felt proud of my journey throughout the Master's and of what I was able to achieve, always with the support of my friends and family.
- Why are awards like this important?
I believe these awards recognize and reward students' efforts in a way that goes beyond grades on a transcript. If announced in a timely manner, they can even serve as extra motivation for students to dedicate themselves to their studies. Additionally, they are a valuable addition to the CV, whether for those aiming to pursue a PhD or enter the job market.
- In your opinion (besides awards ;)), what can and should be done to attract more students to Computer Science and Engineering at Técnico?
I think it's important to show high school students what the course actually involves, the various career paths available, and the impact that computer engineers can have on society.
- Do you have any advice for future Computer Science and Engineering students at Técnico?
My advice is to make the most of your time at university not only to learn, but also to have fun. University isn't just about getting good grades, it's about gaining experiences and meeting new people. Everything becomes easier when you're surrounded by friends, with whom you laugh, share challenges, and create lifelong memories. A few years from now, no one will remember that Calculus test, but everyone will remember the jokes and silly moments you had when you were supposed to be studying.
