Shine Bytes: outstanding students in Computer Science and Engineering

In this edition of Shine Bytes we interview Daniela Costa, winner of the Prémio de Mérito Sky em Algoritmos para Lógica Computacional 2024/2025.
Tell us a little about yourself and your journey at IST
My name is Daniela Borges Costa, I am from Coimbra, where I completed my Bachelor's degree in Informatics Engineering, and I came to Técnico in 2023 to pursue a Master's degree in Computer Science and Engineering.
What did winning this competition mean to you personally?
Winning this award was a recognition of my work, not only in the Algorithms for Computational Logic course but in all the subjects throughout my academic journey, as I have always strived to do my best in everything I do.
Furthermore, as a student living away from home, this award helps me cover the costs associated with moving to Lisbon. These costs are the biggest obstacle to my studies in Lisbon, and it is incredibly rewarding to be able to ease them through my work.
Why are awards like this important?
These awards are important not only to motivate students but also as a demonstration that their work has a meaning beyond grades. The fact that this award is given by a company, not only to a student but also to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, shows the interest of IST’s partners in improving the quality of education and rewarding students, which I find very motivating.
In your opinion (aside from awards ;) ), what can and should be done to attract more women to science?
In my opinion, to attract more women to science, it is important to recognize and highlight the women already present in the field, whether as students, professors or professionals. Many times, I feel apprehensive when I am the only woman or one of the few women in a classroom, which is unfortunately common in computer science. However, remembering the women who inspire me and knowing that my presence might inspire other women to pursue this field motivates me to keep going.
Do you have any advice for future female students in Computer Science and Engineering at Técnico?
If you truly love this field, don’t be discouraged by the fact that there are few women, but, instead, focus on doing your best and proving that women not only belong in Computer Science and Engineering but can also excel in their work.
