The future already exists

Arlindo Oliveira, professor at DEI, returned from Asia and describes, in an article published in the newspaper “Público”, how major southeast asian cities impress with their scale and advanced integration of technology into everyday life, from robots in hotels and autonomous transport to digital payments, super apps and futuristic infrastructure.
However, the article highlights that the real differentiator lies not only in the technology available, but in the speed of adoption, integration, and strategic vision of countries such as China, which view artificial intelligence and innovation as central pillars of economic development. In contrast, the author warns of Europe’s lack of ambition and strategy, arguing that it must adapt in order not to lose competitiveness in the face of Asian technological leadership.
