In this Inside DEI, we will get to know our colleague Alexandre Fernandes a little better.

• Tell us a little about yourself and your journey at IST.

I am Alexandre Fernandes, and I began my duties at Instituto Superior Técnico in 2002, joining what was then the Conselho Directivo (now the Conselho de Gestão). Shortly after starting, I was invited to collaborate in the Área de Graduação, where I held various roles over many years.

In the final stage of this period, I had the opportunity to coordinate the Núcleo de Registo Académico, which was created from scratch to meet the needs of academic management, academic records, student services, applications, grade reports, and the management of the entire financial area of the Área de Graduação, a position I held until June 2025.

On the 30th of June, 2025, I began a new professional chapter by joining the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI).

• Tell us a little about what you do now at DEI.

At DEI, I serve as Coordinator of the Núcleo de Serviços, which ensures the operation and coordination of services across the two campi — Alameda and Taguspark. In this role, I coordinate teams and processes that support the department’s administrative and operational activities, promoting efficiency and the quality of service provided to the academic community.

• What do you enjoy most about your daily work at DEI?

What I value most is the dynamism and diversity of challenges that daily life at DEI brings — no two days are the same. Working in a department with the size and complexity of DEI is demanding, but also extremely rewarding.

I particularly enjoy the interaction with the team — which I consider outstanding — and the opportunity to constantly learn and collaborate with people in different roles and with different responsibilities.

• Who is Alexandre outside of Técnico? 

Outside Técnico, I enjoy spending time with my family and maintaining an active lifestyle. I like to exercise and I love to travel. I am also a big enthusiast of motorcycles, Jeeps, and classic cars.
