AI and future knowledge

Arlindo Oliveira, Professor at DEI, published on the 1st of September, in the newspaper Público, the article “Papagaios estocásticos ou os cientistas do futuro?”.
In the text, Arlindo Oliveira argues that, in the near future, artificial intelligence (AI) may surpass human scientists in the creation of knowledge, since language models have shown remarkable capabilities in complex tasks and continue to evolve with new techniques. Despite criticism that they are merely “stochastic parrots,” there are already signs that these models can generate genuinely new discoveries.
The article also foresees that the science of the future may result from close collaboration between human scientists and digital AI systems.
