AI and digital authoritarianism, by Nuno Nunes

The article “IA: A nova máscara do poder?”, by Nuno Nunes, Professor at DEI, was published on the 28th of August in the Expresso newspaper.

Inspired by a visit to the exhibition “Calculating Empires”, the text argues that technology has never been neutral and that generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to follow a historical logic of power, conquest and control. Although it presents itself as impartial, generative AI  reflects ideological views and can subtly shape perceptions and discourse. Supporting this claim, several studies show that different models produce divergent moral judgments, reinforcing stereotypes and polarization.

The author also warns of the need for a “Public Constitutional AI” that ensures transparency, diversity and democratic control.
