Arlindo Oliveira took part in the opening of the conference series “A Inteligência Artificial em Interação no Mundo Físico”

The new conference series “A Inteligência Artificial em Interação com o Mundo Físico”, a result of a partnership between Instituto Superior Técnico and the Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica de Lisboa, held its inaugural session on the 20th of June at the Técnico Innovation Center. The session was titled “IA à nossa volta.”

The opening panel of speakers included, among others, DEI professor Arlindo Oliveira as a special guest.

In his talk, the professor offered a brief retrospective of AI’s history, framing its advances and limitations. He pointed to the physical world as today’s greatest challenge, due to its unpredictability and dynamic nature, but expressed confidence in the progress of robotics. He stated his belief that we will soon get used to increasingly natural interactions between humans and machines. He ended with an inspiring note, born from a certain concern, particularly regarding younger generations - that curiosity and a spirit of experimentation will always be essential, so that even with increasingly powerful tools, we continue to understand the world and think critically about it.

The conference series will run until February 2026.
