Shine Bytes: outstanding students in Computer Science and Engineering

In this edition of Shine Bytes we interview Susana Monteiro, who won the Prémio de Mérito FIDAWARD IN Engenharia Informática e de Computadores powered by Fidelidade 2022/2023.

Tell us a little about yourself and your journey at IST.

My name is Susana, I'm 23 years old, and I'm from Lisbon.

I've always liked math and physics a lot, which inclined me towards studying engineering. I was introduced to programming a few years before entering IST, and because I enjoyed it, I ended up applying for a degree in Computer Science and Engineering at the Alameda campus. I completed my master's degree in Computer Engineering at Alameda last year.

What did winning this award personally mean to you?

It is always gratifying to see our work and dedication rewarded, so I was very happy when I was awarded the prize and eager to continue giving my best in my professional life.

Why are awards like this important?

On one hand, these awards are important on a personal level for students. They serve as an additional motivation for us to dedicate ourselves even more and act as a reward for our efforts.

On the other hand, they play a fundamental role in bridging the gap between companies and academic life. These initiatives allow participating companies to closely monitor the work developed in universities, potentially opening doors for further collaborations (thesis topics, course projects, etc.). Furthermore, by investing in education, companies are also investing in students who may eventually join their teams.

In your opinion (aside from awards ;) ), what can and should be done to attract more women to science?

It is necessary to deconstruct the idea that computer science and other STEM fields are for men, but this must be done in schools. It is important to expose both boys and girls to these areas so that they can be properly informed when they apply for higher education courses.

However, in my opinion, it is not realistic to achieve a perfect balance between the number of men and women. The main goal should be to ensure that all individuals, regardless of gender, have equal opportunity and encouragement to pursue any field.

Do you have any advice for future female students in Computer Science and Engineering at Técnico?

For future female students, I think the most important thing is to emphasize that they will not be less competent simply because they are women. Additionally, personally, I have never felt undervalued for being a woman in the Computer Science and Engineering course.

I also think it's important to mention (or reinforce) that this course is not exclusive to those who already have experience in programming, but rather for anyone who comes with a willingness to learn. Fortunately, the course provides the necessary foundations for those entering without prior experience, and they will quickly reach the same level as those who already had some knowledge.
