Testimonials: what our Outstanding Students say
In this "Testimonials" we interview Tomás Esteves, awarded with a Prémio de Mérito Celfocus em Engenharia de Software in 2023.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey at IST.
Hello, my name is Tomás Esteves. I'm currently a Master's student in Computer Engineering and Computer Science at Instituto Superior Técnico. I'm specializing in Distributed Systems and Cybersecurity. I did my Bachelor's degree also at Técnico, and my favorite subjects were Operating Systems, Computer Networks, and Distributed Systems. Besides these, a course that also left a mark on me was Software Engineering. This course has a project that allows us to understand how software development is carried out in companies, which will be useful in the future. I'm part of the scholarship students team at DEI, where I develop applications for the department.
What did winning this award personally mean to you?
For me, this award reflects everything I've worked for during my degree: having projects I'm proud of and knowing how to work as part of a team. I'd like to thank all my group colleagues because although they didn't win the award directly, without them it wouldn't have been possible.
Why are awards like this important?
These awards not only motivate students to undertake quality projects but also encourage teamwork. They enable Técnico to establish partnerships with companies and facilitate direct contact between students and companies.
In your opinion (aside from awards ;) ), what can and should be done to attract more students to Computer Engineering at Técnico?
I believe that providing quality education is enough to attract more students to Computer Engineering and Computer Science at Técnico. Students who are currently enrolled and satisfied with the program will recommend it to others, ultimately leading to greater demand.
Do you have any advice for future students of Computer Engineering at Técnico?
Having a good group of classmates will be very helpful, as you can discuss ideas and help each other.
I would advise joining student organizations or associations to learn beyond what is taught in classes.
