Testimonials: what our Outstanding Students say

In this "Testimonials" we interview Daniel Carvalho, awarded with a Prémio de Mérito Celfocus em Engenharia de Software 2023/2024.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey at IST.

My name is Daniel Carvalho, I am 21 years old, and I have just completed my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering. IST was my first choice to continue my academic studies and expand my knowledge in my area of interest, computer science. I had my first contact with the world of programming and computer science during the initial courses of my degree, and since then, it has been a great journey of learning, not only academically but also personally.

What did winning this award personally mean to you?

Receiving this award was extremely gratifying, as it shows that all my effort in this course was recognized and not merely reduced to a grade on my student record. It allowed me to realize that what I learn and apply in this degree are skills I will use in the future.

Why are awards like this important?

I believe that these awards are important for increasing students' competitive spirit and encouraging them to do their best. Many students see university as something they just need to pass, putting in the minimum effort to do so. These awards help mitigate this kind of thinking.

In your opinion (aside from awards ;) ), what can and should be done to attract more students to Computer Engineering at Técnico?

There should be several programs that showcase to high school students what Técnico has to offer, not only in Computer Science and Engineering but also in other courses. If these programs presented the courses and what they entail, as well as stories from alumni and current students, I believe more students would be attracted.

Do you have any advice for future students of Computer Science and Engineering at Técnico?

If you are interested in this course, there is no need to worry about not knowing much about the subject. I myself didn't know much until I studied at Técnico. This course teaches students how to think, work, and learn like a computer scientist, and I believe it provides the necessary foundation for a successful future.
