Title: MEIC 23/24 Analysis

Abstract: The MEIC is one of the largest master's programs at IST (Instituto Superior Técnico) and presents several unique characteristics. Most of the MEIC courses have simultaneous execution on both campuses. The MEIC curriculum offers great flexibility. MEIC includes courses with both 30 and more than 200 enrolled students. These characteristics are, in part, the result of a flexible curriculum that our students appreciate, allowing them to pursue their individual interests.
However, all of this comes with a financial and resource management cost. The introduction of MEPP has created new "ideal" academic paths for our students, as the relationship between the balance of effort in a given period and the "interesting" courses available in that same period has changed. The demand for academic paths based on "local minima" creates some instability in the DEI's resource planning. To limit the extent of these fluctuations, we have implemented a maximum number of enrolled students in the MEIC courses offered by the DEI this year.
In this presentation, we will provide some MEIC statistics from the perspective of our students' interests, both by individual courses and by scientific area. This will allow us to plan the upcoming years with more information. We will also discuss the access to the 2nd cycle, which, with the entry into force of DL65/2018, requires our students to complete the 1st cycle before they can apply for the 2nd cycle, thus losing direct access to their "Continuity Master's".
