Wednesdays@DEI: Talks, 04-03-2026

In the next Wednesdays@DEI, we will have another session on an internal topic of general interest.

Title: PDEIC: Changes for Our PhD Students Starting This Year

Abstract: The Doctoral Program in Computer Science and Engineering (PDEIC) is implementing a set of structural changes with a direct impact on our PhD students—both current candidates and those we aim to attract in the coming years. In this session, four central initiatives will be presented:

(1) the restructuring of the program within the framework of the Doctoral School, including the clarification of the Course Units model;

(2) the simplification of the Thesis Proposal (CAT) process, currently responsible for significant delays, with the goal of regularizing pending situations still this year;

(3) the introduction of an annual formal monitoring mechanism for PhD students, strengthening progress oversight and improving the predictability of the doctoral pathway;

(4) the reinforcement of the PhD Fast Track as a strategic instrument to attract high-quality new students and consolidate the program’s growth.

Brief updates on other ongoing processes will also be shared. The session will include time for open discussion and for gathering input from the DEI community.

Speaker: Nuno Miguel Carvalho dos Santos, Associate Professor at DEI and Coordinator of the PDEIC
