Regarding the creation of a database containing the genome of 1 million Europeans, Professor Ana Teresa Freitas, President of DEI, was interviewed for RTP1’s program “Portugal em Direto.”

The Professor explained how this structure will be developed, how it will be used and the security measures associated with it.

The data obtained is expected to lead to the development of more effective drugs, personalized medicines and even insights into the characteristics or deficits present in the various populations analyzed. For example, it has already been discovered that the Portuguese have a genetic predisposition to vitamin D deficiency, which is essential for the immune system.
