MasterTalk at Técnico – Computer Science and Engineering Department

Lecture: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Bioinformatics – Exploring the projects developed by the professor over the past 35 years, with a focus on developments from the last decade related to deep learning.

The speaker, Professor Arlindo Oliveira, was born in Angola and lived in Mozambique, Portugal, Switzerland, the United States (California and Massachusetts), and Japan. He holds a bachelor's degree from Instituto Superior Técnico and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a full professor at Técnico, the president of the Instituto de Sistemas e Computadores (INESC), a non-executive director of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, a researcher at INESC-ID, a member of the Conselho Nacional de Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação, and a member of the Conselho Consultivo do Painel de Ciência e Tecnologia do Parlamento Europeu (STOA). Professor Arlindo Oliveira has authored four books, translated into various languages, and hundreds of scientific and outreach articles. He has served on the boards of several companies and institutions, including the presidency of Técnico, the Associação Portuguesa para a Inteligência Artificial, and INESC-ID. He has been the director of the Portuguese node of the European biological data network ELIXIR, a visiting professor at MIT and the University of Tokyo, and a researcher at CERN, INESC, Cadence Research Laboratories, and the Electronics Research Lab in Berkeley. He is a member of the Academy of Engineering and a senior member of the IEEE. He has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa / Santander award for research excellence in 2009. At Instituto Superior Técnico, he taught courses including Fundamentals of Programming, Algorithms and Data Structures, Algorithm Analysis and Synthesis, Machine Learning, Computer Architecture, Computational Biology, and Advanced Algorithms.
