The article “O fim da ciência que nos faz falta?”, by Luís Caires, Professor at DEI, was published on the 25th of august in the newspaper “Público”.

Starting from the government’s announcement of the extinction of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and the Agência Nacional da Inovação (ANI) to create a new agency that combines science and innovation, Luís Caires questions this decision, pointing out that the objectives of those institutions already serve that mission. He recalls that the FCT was fundamental to the progress of recent decades, being essential for research funding and for the international projection of Portuguese science. In this way, he argues that the FCT should be reformed and modernized, not extinguished, since its mission remains current and indispensable.
