DEI Professor develops AI tool to accelerate fact-checking and fight disinformation

Sofia Pinto, a Professor at DEI, argues that current manual fact-checking methods are too slow and insufficient to stop the rapid spread of disinformation. Based on this premise, her team developed an automated fact-checking model powered by Artificial Intelligence, which replicates the journalistic process and provides detailed explanations of its conclusions. The project, tested with over one hundred journalists, aims to help professionals respond more quickly to potential fake news.

The Professor also emphasizes the importance of adapting disinformation-combat strategies to younger generations through personalized language and formats. Despite the advantages of AI, she warns of the risks of excessive use, which can reduce critical thinking and analytical capacity, especially in educational contexts.
