Abstract: This document presents a doctoral thesis advancing group management technology. The objective is to develop a system that is able to recognize how to optimally divide a population into groups based on the subjects' interaction preferences, and then adapt learning content to those groups, so that collective performance is increased. This is an innovative and interesting research target, given the need for group-based intelligent tutoring and adaptive learning systems, and that, unlike current work on group organization and management, it focuses on human preferences from the perspective of working in a group in order to adapt education and training, while combining both computational and psychology-based processes when characterizing the state and preference of subjects. In order to fulfill this vision, the document starts by defining an interaction model that is able to profile the types of peer interaction that might occur when completing team tasks, while describing multiple research that inspired and validated this model. Afterwards, guided by the previously defined interaction model and several studies on matchmaking and coalition structure generation problems, some group organization methodologies are identified, defined, explored, and evaluated using agent-based simulations. While addressing some of the needs expressed by works focusing on existing group management platforms, this work culminates with the construction and deployment of a practical tool targeted to apply the developed group management technology in the real world.
