Título: Improving Software Development Productivity with Language Models: A Research Roadmap

Abstract: The global software development market is expected to grow double-digit annually throughout this decade, amplified by the increasing digitalization of our society. By contrast, the need for more software developers limits the pace of this growth. In 2021, more than 60% of EU enterprises seeking IT professionals faced challenges when filling their positions. While the educational sector cannot keep up with the demand for new software developers, the industry is progressively adopting solutions aimed at improving developers' productivity. In this context, we observe an ever-increasing number of AI-based systems focused on assisting developers in their daily tasks (e.g., GitHub Copilot). Yet, their impact on the software evolution, maintenance, and quality aspects remains to be studied. This talk explores strategies for investigating and assessing the use and application of AI techniques, with a particular emphasis on Language Models and their tools, in the software development lifecycle.
